One of my favorite parts of visiting Outside the Bowl Super Kitchens is getting to know the cultures of the communities where our kitchens are located. I have fallen more in love with Mexico because of visits to Tijuana, Mexicali, and Jalisco over the past three years. The food, the warmth of the people, the lively music, the beautiful architecture, the incredible handicrafts, and deeply rooted traditions all make me appreciate our neighbors to the south.
Did you know that OTB has an online home party kit called our Super Kitchen Supper? It was put together to inspire people to share OTB with their friends and networks. Today, we’re sharing how you can use the resources to spend time with your family through cooking, crafts, music, learning, and prayer.
TIJUANA SUPER KITCHEN RECIPES
We took a handful of recipes, converted them from serving hundreds of meals to just 10 people, and translated them into manageable recipe cards for home use. There are some unique (to us) ingredients like dried peppers. Do a quick search and learn how to rehydrate these peppers. These are the base of both of our soup recipes. Get creative with supplementing ingredients. Visit a new grocery store or support a local market that may be more likely to have some of these ingredients. ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS
These activities use craft supplies and items that you should have lying around your house. Have your children decorate your dinner table with Fiesta Flowers and Papel Piccados. As dinner is cooking, turn a cup, some string, a Popsicle stick, and a bead into Balero. Start a tournament on how many tries it takes to get the bead in the cup. Add a science lesson by changing the length of the string to see if it is easier or more difficult. Print out the Table Talk Questions and during dinner, take turns going around the table answer the questions. We’ve even created a Spotify playlist to listen to while working away!
